Methyl Isobutyl Ketone (MIBK)

Methyl-isobutyl-ketone is a colorless liquid, easily soluble in water and other organic solvents with high inflammability. It has a specific odor.

Method of obtaining

There are two main methods in producing this ketone. In the first method, it is obtained from isopropanol in the mixed ketone process. Diketone (DIBK) and acetone  are by-products of this process. In the other method, MIBK is obtained from acetone with hydrogen during three stages: aldol condensation, dehydration and hydrogenation.

Application
Methyl-isobutyl-ketone is an excellent solvent. It is mainly used as a solvent in cellulose- and resin-based coatings and glues. It is also used as an extractant for antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals. In the metallic extraction, it is used as a solvent to separate metals. MIBK is a chemical used in producing ultimate particles such as rubber antiozonants (used in tire production) and diol acetylene compounds.

Storage and transport
Methyl-isobutyl-ketone should be stored in a cool, dry and well-ventilated place away from any ignition sources likely to cause its self-ignition. For transport purposes, it is classified as ADR (ADR classification code: F1, RID/ADR class: 3, hazard label: 3, UN number: 1245).
