Chemical and physical properties: A solid body in the form of white flakes or crystals, with a fine phenol odor; poorly dissolves in water
Application of the substance: Bisphenol A can be used as an intermediate product to produce epoxy, polycarbonate and polysulfone resins and plastics – for instance polyesters, which include polycarbonates used among others as a material to produce bottles and polyethers. It is also used as a retardant – the agent reducing the flammability or the flame intensity, and as an output substance to produce other antipirens. It is also used as an antioxidant in foodstuffs and cosmetics, and as an element of epoxy coatings lining cans with food or beverages. Bisphenol A can also be used as a fungicide.
Health safety: Inhaling causes the irritation of the upper respiratory passages and mucous membranes. Inhaling the dust can cause the irritation of the nose and throat. Inhaling can also impair the functioning of the liver, kidneys and the urinary bladder. Bisphenol A causes a mild irritation of the skin and allergic reactions, which become visible after it has repeatedly been exposed to that substance. Rubbing the eyes with this substance can result in the damage to the cornea, strong irritation of the eyes and other eye injuries. If consumed, it can cause the irritation of the alimentary tract, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, and bigger quantities consumed can cause the depression of the central nervous system, headache, dizziness, gastritis, and sometimes can even result in an intestinal hemorrhage.
